I'm doing a blog seriers on answering some of your top questions when it comes to essential oils. I thought this would be fun and a great way to get information out to you that you want to hear. I'll be doing a few of these blogs so please feel free to send me your questions via email, fb message, comment on my fb post about the blog or even comment on here. So here we go.
Holly H. How does it work, do you just smell them? (note: I know little about essential oils)
- This is a great first question! There are so many ways people use essential oils and yes the first one is you can smell them. Whether you smell them out of a bottle, put them in a diffuser, put a few drops on a pendant or bracelet, wear it as perfume. So even just using them that way gives you many alternative ways to inhale them aroma.
You can clean with essential oils. I have written many times about getting rid of harsh and toxic chemicals out of your home and using all natural ingredients with essential oils to clean your whole home. I even use them in my laundry, I make my own air fresheners, here is a short blog I did on cleaning a sink.
You can cook with essential oils. Most brand of essential oils you can not ingest so if you would like to cook with essential oils (hint: chocolate brownie with peppermint essential oils is divine) You must make sure it states on the bottle that you can ingest them. Ones that have been approved by Health Canada to ingest also helps you to know you can ingest them.
You use essential oils topically. This is a great way to use oils as long as you do it safely. I recommend you always dilute your oils with a carrier oil. This has many benefits including keeping the oils on your skin longer to be able to absorb the oils as they are highly volatile which means they evaporate quickly. You can use the oils topically for many reasons the same way as you can use them by diffusing.
Not matter which method you choose to use essential oils they are going in your body. Breathing them in, putting them on your skin, ingesting them so remember this when choosing your oils. If they are not pure do you want whatever else is in that bottle in your body? The caveat with most of the ways you can use essential oils is to make sure you are using at minimum a 100% pure essential oils. If you want an extra boost to cleaning and therapeutic value to using your essential oils then you also require a high quality essential oil.
Janet F. Also myths and truths - does the use of tree tea oil cause early puberty?
- I just posted about this in one of my groups. This is another great and important question. I will not only answer this put add a link to Dr. Papas who is a world leading scientist who works with essential oils. Usually I get asked this question about lavender or clary sage but it is all the same the answer is no. The reason being is that to cause early puberty you would need a hormone to do that and there is no essential oil molecules that are shaped like a hormone. Unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation out there, and which is why I don't just want you to take my word on things. I provide as much science as I can to back up what I write about. Also the old telephone game is well and alive online. One person(s) mis-reads something and it goes like wild fire. Just like there is a rumor that people took as fact that you can use eucalyptus on a child. The author who studied and wrote about that actually said don't put it on a child's face, near their nose... Not that you can't use it on a child. He even published more on it since it got out of hand from what he meant. That is just one example of just like in anything things can be taken out of context and confuse people. If you would like to read more of the science behind this here is the post from Dr. Papas
Lianne K. If I'm already fairly healthy, what more can They do for me?
- Wow Lianne I'm glad you asked that question. There are so many things you can use essential oils for as I mentioned some above. Depending on how healthy you want to be, do you want your home more healthy then I recommend you get rid of the store bought cleaners and use natural ingredients with essential oils. How matter how healthy someone is they are susceptible to germs and viruses, you can use essential oils to help keep you healthy and give aid to your immune system. Here is how I make my own foaming hand soap that has 2 folds for keeping us healthy. Here is another blog on how I keep my kids from getting the start of school sickies. For athletes and people who are working out, if you want a better work out you can use essential oils. Here is a link to a blog I wrote about peppermint essential oils which has a link to a study done that you may be interested in ready about sports and peppermint essential oil. Not to mention using essential oils after you work out instead of over the counter stinky synthetic ones. As you can see there are so many way using essential oils can be beneficial for those that are already feeling healthy. This is also just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to using oils to keep and stay healthy.
