Here we go again, my husband accidentally deleted my first draft so let's hope I can do this again..
Lavender is a smell you love or hate. there are not too many people in the middle grey zone. Although I should state that most people who dislike the smell of lavender are smelling the synthetic version of it.
Most people associate lavender with its calmative* qualities from a pure and especially a high quality essential oil with its many constituents. That is not something you get from synthetics, all your store bought baby products with the added scent of lavender is just that synthetic. It is not the synthetic lavender helping to calm or baby to sleep. I would say it is your love, attention and massages. The amazing thing about high quality lavender is that it helps with that and so much more. In Aromatherapy lavender is used as a nervine and calmative* as well as used to relieve as a carminative and antispasmodic for symptomatic relief of digestive discomfort* Personally I'm very allergic to mosquito bites, the kind where you want to rip off your skin. I take my lavender touch bottle ( a pre diluted bottle of lavender purchase here) and roll it over my bite and within a minute I no longer want to rip off my skin. I still have a big red bump but at least it is not itchy anymore. I use the same for my kids and of course you all know you always dilute your oils especially when putting them on any child. If you need more information about dilution rates please reach out to me and I can send you a chart.
Some people use lavender for the symptomatic relief of acne and boils* This is also a because in aromatherapy lavender is used to relieve minor skin irritations, cuts and burns* I like to sometimes dilute my lavender with coconut oil to treat such things including diaper rash. I also like to throw in some other good oils for that too such as tea tree and frankincense.
Did you know if you use high quality oils that have been approved by Health Canada for ingestion you can cook with them? Mind you like we say these are very potent oils so you only need a drop or 2 for yourself and the same goes for cooking. You only need 1 drop and depending on what you are making and the oil you are using sometimes you only need to stick a toothpick in the top and swirl it around. Such as whip cream if you would like a little orange flavor to go with your fruit just stick a toothpick in the top of your wild orange and swirl it around in your whip cream.... YUM!!! Use lavender in your cooking to soften citrus flavors and add a flavorful twist to marinades, baked good and desserts. You can also make lavender chicken :) One of my mom's favorites.
Now back to the relaxing side of lavender. Just to be aware lavender is relaxing for most of the population but there is a small percentage of the population that lavender actually has the opposite affect on, it will make them hyper / bouncing off the walls. So before you diffuse it or use it in any way especially on a child you may want to test it during the day not right before bedtime as to me that would be the last time you would want to test out that theory. I have heard people with ADHD have a higher chance of having this reaction to lavender. No worries though there are a lot of alternatives in the essential oils world to help calm. You can add a few drops of lavender to your pillows, bedding or diluted on the bottle of your feet when you need the extra support. You can also make a air freshener with rubbing alcohol or vodka with water in a spritzer bottle with lavender to freshen your linen closet, mattress, car or any room in your house. If you do want to add any essential oil into your bath tub there are a few precautions. Please make sure it is not a hot oil and always dilute and prep before it goes in the tub. NEVER!! directly put essential oil in the tub. Take some espsom salt and you can add some fractonated coconut oils or which ever oil you like and put that in a cup, then add a few drops of which ever essential oil you like such as lavender. Mix your bath salts then add that to your tub. That way the essential oils will not just sit on top of the water and you can relax and enjoy. Tough day? apply some lavender ( of course diluted) to your temples and back of neck before bed

Above I mentioned that a lot of people know the synthetic versions of lavender and some people don't even know they are using synthetic versions as you can not trust labels. As an example of this I will use the oils you can get from Walmart. They say 100% pure essential oil on the bottle when in fact they are anything but or something totally different in the bottle as explained in these 2 wonderful post by a world renowned scientist and expert in essential oils read more here and here.
