Over my time working with and teaching about essential oils I have come across a lot of unsafe usage when it comes to using essential oils in the bath tub!! Not only in person while chatting with people but also seeing what people write on-line.
A lot of people love to use essential oils in the bath tub. There are a tun of blogs and websites with recipes on which oils to use for relaxing or feeling better. Problem I'm finding is people are not following the good recipes and using the oils in an unsafe way. Remember essential oils pack a strong punch. Of course I'm only going to discus 100% pure and high quality oils here, using oils that are not 100% pure (don't go just by the label ) can cause a host of other issues.
**** DO NOT put essential oils directly in a bath!!***** Remember oil and water don't mix so what happens is the oils just sit on top of the water and go on your skin as you enter the tub. Every part of you that enters the water. I know someone who put cinnamon since they love the scent directly in the tub. Cinnamon is a hot hot oil so you can imagine the pain in the nether regions . I have a few more stories like these even including kids.
So please do not use any oils that are considered HOT oils in the bath tub - like ever - never - even diluted. Just like on your skin always dilute your oils and you want to dilute them first before putting them in your bath. So for example you want to use epsom salts I would also suggest you use a carrier oil with a soap such as castile or scent free shampoo that way the oils are not only diluted but will be suspended in the water vs laying on top of the water. This is much better for your health and you skin. When you have sensitive skin or a child or animal very important to always dilute your essential oils. This will not affect the efficacy of oils and there has even been proof that the oils will work better with you if you use a carrier oil. You will still get that 1 or 2 drops in your body and even more so since the carrier oil will help your essential oils not evaporate off your skin as fast.
I would also like to caution using citrus oils or bergamot in the bath. If not diluted and washed off those oils can cause issues if you expose your skin to the sun within 12 hours. They can cause photosensitivity which is something you don't want to happen so safety first as we say in my family. Here is a link that explains about essential oils and photosensitivity
Keep in mind when using high quality essential oils you only need a drop or 2. Keep this in mind when looking up recipes for your bath tub essential oils usage. You do not need many drops and again with children or people with sensitive skin you use even less. When it comes to essential oils less is more and more is less ( oils don't work as well if you use too much at once)
